History of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Deep (Ross Island)
This Island is formaly known as ROSS ISLAND named after a british captain Daniel Ross, who is famous surveyor he is retired as a Marine Surveyor General in Bengal in 1833, Now its renamed by our Prime Ministaer Shri Narendra Modi in 2018 as “Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep”. This island stands in Port Blair South Andaman District. It takes 15 to 20 minutes journey from Abeerdeen jetty travel by small boats capacity of 10 pax. When britishers are in power before independence Ross Island is known as Paris of the East. If you want to know the history of this island when you entered on this island when you walks on the pathway that tells the story of this island on both sides of the pathway that you notice are several boards explaining in details of the history of the place.
This Island was inhabited by the Britishers for several decades before they moved to Port Blair. This isalnd was first occupied and buit a sanatorium there in 1782 and then the britishers are occupied again in 1857 and used as Capital of Andaman Administrative Headquaters for Britishers used about 80-85 years.
During this period the britishers built a lot of buildings and settled their families and other administrative people here on Ross Island. The britishers used to buit the all buildings and their all works with hardened freedom fighters of India who were deported here from the main land.
This Island indeed a special place in history of freedom struggle of India. The buildings that you see on the path of this island are a testimony of hard work of our freedom fighters, the buildings are a bakery, secretariat, Chief Commissioners residence, swimming pool, Tennis court, Church, Water treatment plant, Hospital, Printing press, Government house, Sailors barrack and mess, Grand ballrooms and much more for enjoying their luxurious life with their families. And all this are later abandoned after an earthquake hit in 1941.
Once again this Island was occupied by Japanes from1942 to 1945, During Japanies period they built a lot of bunkers are their and around Port Blair. And in this period Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose took the help of Japanese fight against the British and he also spent a day in this Islands in December 1943.
The ruins of old buildings made by Indian freedom fighters are still present at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep (Ross Island), Captured the whole buildings by thick roots of Series and Peepal trees that takes us back to an era, So many years are gone but still remembered.
One more beautiful of this island is with it’s protected forest which is a sanctuary of a variety of birds and animals like peacocks and deer are roaming openly with public, that present a wonderful experience for those tourists who loves nature and animals and enjoy their time in the the shade of tall tropical trees.
Any kind of settlements are prohibited in these islands. Means no stay at night in this islands everyone must to be leave this island before night, only officials are perform their duties ordered by Andaman administration.
How to Reach NSCB Dweep (Ross Island) ?
This Island is very nearby Aberdeen jetty (Port Blair) the whole Dweep is completely seen from Marina Park (Water Sports Complex) and is disconnected by land not connected by road so is not possible to reach by cab.
There is a lot of small fiber boats capacity of 10 pax each and operated by private tourist boat association are operating from Aberdeen jetty. There is a ticket counter at Marina Park (water sports complex) this counter operates from 9.00 AM to 2.00 PM all days except when the sea is rough. You can book a ticket in advance all tickets are sold-out in advance due to minimum boats.
Need any photo id card issued by Indian government is required for ticket booking. In case you are not an Indian citizen you need passport. Don’t forget to take id proof.
